What Is Topical Authority?
Definition
Topical authority is the degree to which search engines and AI systems recognize your site as a complete, credible source on a subject. It's earned by covering a topic thoroughly enough that engines can reliably extract accurate answers from you — and it's the single biggest factor in whether AI cites your brand.

Written by Mousa Kadaei, founder of Citevis. Topical authority is the concept everything else on this site rests on. I didn't invent it — Koray Tuğberk GÜBÜR did — but I've watched it decide, more than any other factor, whether AI engines mention a brand or ignore it completely.
Most people hear "topical authority" and picture publishing a lot of blog posts. That's not it. It's about completeness — covering every question, sub-question, and adjacent concept in a topic so thoroughly that a search engine or an AI never has to look elsewhere to answer a query in your space. When you're the source that answers everything, you become the source that gets cited.
How Do You Actually Build Topical Authority?
You build topical authority by covering a topic completely and in a deliberate order — publishing the foundational concepts first, then the pages that depend on them, so search engines can trust you one topic at a time. It is coverage plus sequence plus internal linking, not raw volume.
Koray frames it as a formula I keep coming back to:
- Topical coverage — every angle of your subject, with no gaps. A single query fans out into 8–12 sub-questions inside AI engines; complete coverage means you match more of them.
- Historical data — signals that accumulate over time: age, consistent publishing, brand search demand. This is why old work keeps paying off. I saw a three-year-old press release earn a Gemini citation — historical data compounding.
- Internal link precision — connecting your pages so authority flows correctly, from specific pages up to the pillars they support.
The brands that win AI citations aren't the ones with the cleverest single article. They're the ones that own their entire topic, from the beginner definition to the expert edge case.
Why Does Topical Authority Decide AI Visibility?
Because AI engines don't retrieve from a special "AI index" — they retrieve from the same search indices classic SEO targets, then assemble answers from what they find. Google's own "search with stateful chat" patent describes it: your question gets chunked into sub-queries, each searches the existing indices, and passages are selected to build the answer.
So if you have complete topical coverage, you're present in every index the AI checks. And here's the compounding part: when most of the retrieved passages come from one authoritative source, the engine trusts that source more and cites it more. Topical authority isn't a ranking trick — it's the mechanism that makes you the default answer. I break the full pipeline down in GEO vs SEO.
Topical Authority vs. Domain Authority
These get confused constantly. Domain authority is a broad, backlink-driven score for your whole site. Topical authority is subject-specific — you can have low domain authority and still dominate a narrow topic if your coverage is complete and credible. This is genuinely good news for small brands: you don't need to outrank giants everywhere, only to own your specific corner completely. It's the entire basis of how a small SaaS can beat an enterprise competitor in AI visibility.
Frequently Asked Questions About Topical Authority
How long does topical authority take to build?
In my experience, a focused site covering a narrow topic completely can earn AI citations in weeks on fast engines like Perplexity, and meaningful Google authority in 3–6 months. Historical data compounds, so the curve steepens over time — the hardest part is the beginning, before you have any track record.
Can a small site out-rank a big one on topical authority?
Yes, and it's often the smart play. A small site that covers one topic deeply and consolidates its internal links can beat a giant that covers it shallowly. Small sites are also hit less hard by core updates. Depth on a narrow topic beats thin coverage of a broad one.
Does topical authority matter for AI engines specifically?
It matters more for AI than for classic search. AI engines assemble answers from multiple retrieved passages, so a source that covers a whole topic gets pulled in repeatedly and becomes the trusted default. Incomplete coverage means the AI stitches its answer from your competitors instead.
Is publishing volume the same as topical authority?
No — and this is the most common mistake. Ten thin posts on scattered subjects build nothing. Five complete, interlinked pages that fully cover one topic build real authority. AI engines even deduplicate by domain, so one strong page beats several weak ones on the same subject.
