What Is AI Share of Voice?
Definition
AI share of voice is the percentage of AI-generated answers in your category that mention your brand, measured against the total mentions across you and your competitors. It turns "are we visible?" into "how visible are we compared to everyone else fighting for the same answer?"

Written by Mousa Kadaei, founder of Citevis. Early on, I obsessed over whether my brand got mentioned at all. Then I realized a mention means little if a competitor is named in 80% of the same answers. Share of voice is the number that actually tells you where you stand.
A raw mention count feels good but lies to you. Getting named in 3 out of 10 AI answers sounds fine — until you learn your competitor is named in 8 of those same 10. AI share of voice fixes that blind spot by making the metric relative. In a world where an AI answer names only two or three brands, your slice of that space is what matters, not your absolute count.
How Do You Calculate AI Share of Voice?
You calculate AI share of voice by running a consistent set of category prompts across AI engines, counting how often each brand is mentioned, and dividing your mentions by the total mentions across all brands.
Your AI Share of Voice = Your Brand Mentions ÷ Total Brand Mentions (all competitors) × 100
Example: cited in 30 of 100 category answers where competitors are cited 70 times total → 30 ÷ 100 = 30% share of voice
The rigor is in the setup. You need a stable, representative set of prompts your buyers actually ask, run across each platform, on a schedule — because AI answers shift over time and vary by engine. One-off spot checks give you noise; a fixed prompt set run repeatedly gives you a trend you can act on.
Why Does AI Share of Voice Matter More Than Mention Count?
Because AI answers are a nearly zero-sum space. A Google results page has ten slots; an AI answer names two or three brands. When the AI recommends a competitor instead of you, you didn't just miss a mention — you lost the recommendation entirely for that buyer. Share of voice is the only metric that captures that competitive reality.
An AI answer isn't a list you appear somewhere on. It's a short recommendation. Either you're one of the two or three names, or you're nowhere — and share of voice is how you measure which.
It's also the metric that makes AI visibility strategic instead of vanity. Tracking your brand mentions tells you if you exist in AI answers. Tracking share of voice tells you whether you're winning — and exactly which competitors are taking the space you want.
How Do You Improve Your AI Share of Voice?
You improve share of voice by taking citation space from competitors on the prompts that matter — which means out-covering and out-structuring them on those specific topics:
- Find the prompts where competitors dominate. Those are your targets — the queries where they're named and you aren't.
- Build deeper topical authority on those exact topics. AI engines cite the most complete source; out-cover the competitor who currently owns the answer.
- Structure passages to win extraction. Direct answers, statistics, and clean standalone blocks get pulled into answers over vague competitor content.
- Strengthen third-party presence. AI engines cross-reference reviews and comparisons — being named favorably across independent sources lifts your share.
Frequently Asked Questions About AI Share of Voice
What's a good AI share of voice?
It depends on how crowded your category is, but since AI answers name only a few brands, being in 30%+ of your category's answers is strong, and category leaders often exceed 50%. Most brands start in the single digits. The trend matters more than the absolute number — rising share against a named competitor is the real win.
How is AI share of voice different from traditional share of voice?
Traditional share of voice measures your slice of ad spend, search rankings, or social mentions. AI share of voice measures your slice of AI-generated recommendations — a scarcer space, since an answer names two or three brands, not ten. It maps far more directly to whether a buyer hears your name at decision time.
Can I measure share of voice without a tool?
You can start manually: pick 20–30 category prompts, run them across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and tally mentions per brand. It works but doesn't scale or stay current, since answers shift constantly. Tools like Citevis automate the prompt runs and track the trend over time.
Does share of voice vary by AI platform?
Significantly. You might hold strong share of voice in Perplexity, which favors fresh, well-structured content, while trailing in ChatGPT, which leans more on training data and established entity signals. Measuring per-platform shows you exactly where to focus your work.
